Retired church superintendent Erich Schuppan receives the Federal Cross of Merit for his life-long service for humanism and tolerance. - September
"Tour de Tolérance" - an event organized by the town of Eberswalde with more than 1,000 cyclists going from Eberswalde via Bernau and Berlin to Potsdam where the tour ends with a rally for tolerance and against xenophobia.

The 2002 State of Brandenburg Gardening Exhibition takes place in Eberswalde. More than 600,000 visitors see the modern horticultural show with many flowers and numerous leisure time activities staged on the post-industrial land near the Finow Canal. - October
Eberswalde receives a bronze plaque (national prize) for its combined efforts concerning town renewal activities, protection of historical monuments and urban planning from the "Städtebaukongress der Bundesregierung".

The so-called "Familiengarten" (Family Garden) is opened on the former grounds of the 2002 State of Brandenbug Gardening Exhibition. - August
Opening of the "Sporthallenkomplex Westend" (gym) and the "baff" (indoor swimming pool with numerous pools, giant slide, small outdoor pool and spa area).

2004 | - Eberswalde celebrates its 750th birthday. Celebrations lasted one year. One climax was the parade with more than 4,000 citizens of Eberswalde dressed up in the historical costumes. A booklet entitled "Zeitzeichen" (sings of the times) is published.
- 4th September: The "BRANDENBURG-TAG 2004" (state fair) is staged in Eberswalde. The town welcomes more than 140,000 visitors who enjoy a wealth of activities in beautiful sunshine and eat among many other things a giant plum cake of 16 square metres and a 40-kilogram giant meatball.
