Ceremonial opening of Cottbuser Straße to traffic
Things are moving in the neighbourhood. After Frankfurter Allee, the Schorfheidestraße/Beeskower Straße junction and others, Cottbuser Straße was also officially opened on 29 April 2024. Together with its partners, the city of Eberswalde has completed another measure to modernise and improve the quality of life in the Brandenburg Quarter. The expansion project is part of a cooperation agreement concluded between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning (MIL), Wohnungsgenossenschaft 1893 eG and the city of Eberswalde for the integrated development of the Brandenburgisches Viertel.
The project was implemented in three construction phases, which included the general renewal, extension and reinforcement of the carriageway and pavements. Furthermore, the perpendicular parking spaces on both sides were modernised and additional longitudinal parking spaces were created. New infiltration troughs were installed for drainage. At the Cottbuser Straße/Senftenberger Straße junction, a so-called non-genuine roundabout in asphalt now makes turning easier. As in the entire Brandenburg neighbourhood, the rule here is: right before left. A new centre island in large stone paving makes it easier for pedestrians to cross the road. Finally, the carriageway was widened to a width of 4.20 metres up to the pavement in the direction of Spreewaldstraße and the access road to the car park was also connected.
A total of 23 new light points illuminate the street. Half of the 19 newly planted trees are particularly resistant to drought and heat and come from the "Trees 4 Streets" research programme and are considered to be particularly climate-adapted. "The Brandenburg neighbourhood is redefining itself. At this point on Cottbuser Straße, the image of the past is history," as Mayor Götz Herrmann summarised during the inauguration.
The construction project was financed by funds from the federal government, the state of Brandenburg from the "Social Cohesion" urban development programme and the city of Eberswalde's own funds. The latter would like to thank the construction company Berger Bau SE and TSC Beratende Ingenieure GmbH & Co. KG for the construction planning.
