Silent commemoration of the victims of National Socialism in Eberswalde

Memory is a universal place.

The victims of National Socialism were commemorated in Eberswalde on 27 January 2026. On this occasion, Mayor Götz Herrmann, together with the District Administrator of the Barnim district, Daniel Kurth, laid flowers in silent remembrance at the memorial to the victims of fascism in Eberswalde, which was inaugurated in 1950. Pupils from Finow Grammar School also took part in the commemoration and laid a bouquet of flowers.

At the invitation of the head of the town, the wreath-laying ceremony took place in the presence of various representatives of town politics and civil society in the area formerly known as the "Rose Garden" in the Finow district. The memorial in the former "Rose Garden" was dedicated to the Finow residents Karl Bach and Max Puhl, who both lost their lives in Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

For many years now, silent remembrance has been called for in Eberswalde to remind current and future generations of what happened and of the many dead, wounded and displaced persons during the Nazi era.

The anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp was declared an official day of remembrance in Germany in 1966 on the initiative of the then Federal President Roman Herzog. Due to current political developments in particular, it is important to never forget or trivialise the crimes of the Nazi regime.
