Commemoration of the "Day of Liberation" on 8 May 2026
This year marks the 81st anniversary of the liberation from National Socialism on Friday, 8 May 2026. Traditionally, the city of Eberswalde calls for joint commemoration on this date. The official wreath-laying ceremony on "Liberation Day" will take place at 11 a.m. at the Soviet memorial in the Waldfriedhof cemetery on Freienwalder Straße.
The Second World War in Europe ended on 8 May 1945 with the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht and the associated signing of the surrender document. After six years of war, this also marked the end of the twelve-year National Socialist dictatorship in Germany.
