Eberswalde’s first ‘PikoPark’ is taking shape!
A step towards greater biodiversity and climate protection in the Brandenburgische Viertel neighbourhood.
Together with the WaldWelten Foundation and the City of Eberswalde, WHG has unveiled the plans for Eberswalde’s first ‘PikoPark’. ‘PikoParks’ (from ‘piccolo’ = small) are new types of green spaces being created in urban areas.
The green space between Potsdamer Allee, Frankfurter Allee, Finsterwalder Straße and Cottbuser Straße is being redesigned to be close to nature. Instead of monotonous lawns, there will be flower meadows and perennial beds, natural stone walls and deadwood structures, as well as a lizard sanctuary.
This means that birds, hedgehogs, wild bees, butterflies, beetles, lizards and many other species will in future find food, shelter and habitat – right in their local neighbourhood.
Henrik Hundertmark (3rd from right), Managing Director of WHG: “The ecological enhancement of our housing estates is an important investment in the future. We are promoting biodiversity in the immediate neighbourhood, thereby creating added value not only for our tenants.”
Ilja Haub (1st from left), Head of the Department for Construction and Urban Development, also emphasises the importance of the project: “The nature-oriented design is intended to make Eberswalde more climate-resilient, reduce heat stress and promote biodiversity. It’s great that WHG is making a contribution.”
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety as part of the ‘Natural Climate Protection in Local Authorities’ action programme.
