Karl-Marx-Ring: Section comprehensively refurbished
On 25 August 2026, the section of Karl-Marx-Ring between Schulstraße, Jahnstraße and Schönholzer Straße was officially opened following a complete refurbishment. Since August 2025, around 8,500 square metres of road surface have been redesigned. The construction costs, including all ancillary costs, amounted to approximately 1.45 million euros. The project was financed entirely from municipal funds. The engineering consortium WTU GmbH was commissioned to carry out the planning. STRABAG AG was entrusted with the implementation of the construction project as the contractor.
The carriageway was constructed using asphalt, with a width of 5.55 and 6.60 metres respectively. In two places, it narrows to 4.45 metres. This is to protect the existing old plane trees and their root zones. At the same time, the narrow sections help to calm traffic. The pavements have also been renewed and given a modern design. Anthracite-coloured safety strips separate them from the carriageway. Low-vibration concrete paving blocks were used, which are suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. The parking spaces were rearranged and laid out in a longitudinal pattern using the existing large paving blocks.
A new, underground-cabled LED lighting system will provide contemporary illumination in future. The 4.50-metre-high poles support anthracite-coloured ‘Lisa 1401’ luminaires manufactured by SLF GmbH in Finow. The warm white, insect-friendly light colour improves the illumination of the street environment. The old lighting system was dismantled by the Eberswalde municipal works department and replaced with the new system.
Another key focus of the construction project was the redesign of the drainage system and the extensive renewal of the supply pipes belonging to E.DIS Netz GmbH, EWE AG and the Eberswalde Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal Association (ZWA). Greened infiltration basins arranged on both sides of the road will in future collect rainwater. Intersections and around 500 square metres of the adjoining Schulstraße will be drained via so-called box gutters into a new, large infiltration basin. This is intended to prevent the drainage system from becoming overloaded – and thus prevent flooding – even during heavy rainfall. Two additional road drains will also improve drainage on Schönholzer Straße at the junction with Karl-Marx-Ring.
“With the upgrade of Karl-Marx-Ring, we are improving both traffic flow and the quality of the public space, whilst creating a modern infrastructure for local residents. Refurbished pavements, contemporary lighting and paved junction areas enhance safety and also help to calm traffic. As well as enhancing the public space in the Finow district, we are simultaneously implementing sustainable solutions for rainwater management, thereby contributing to a climate-resilient and future-proof infrastructure,” said Ilja Haub, Head of the Department for Construction and Urban Development.
In autumn 2026, the project will be completed with extensive planting work. Plans include around 20 new trees and numerous shrubs. This will give the refurbished Karl-Marx-Ring an additional green enhancement to round off the project.
